Lately I've been pondering the link between wellbeing and health, how I currently understand and experience in myself, and what I've observed over the many years of treating and helping people with their health and healing.
A small yet significant number of people who have long term disruptions to the architecture and function of the body, somehow experience a complete remission. This occurs by some mechanism which has hitherto defied materialist scientific reasoning.
I've been fascinated by accounts of and research into these cases of spontaneous remissions from cancer and near death experiences. I've witnessed a few of them myself. There aren't many that are this dramatic, yet they are enough to captivate my inquisitive mind as to the possible mechanism which underpin these magical occurrences.
Wellbeing & health
Health and wellbeing are related yet not the same thing, at least that's how it seems to my mind.
Health refers mostly to the functioning of the physical body - this is a variable.
Wellbeing is an underlying constant and refers to a sense of being just so in mind and emotions, regardless of the circumstances or state of physical health.
We all know and have experienced moments of tremendous wellbeing, when everything feels just right, when anything is possible, despite the circumstances or level of physical health we find ourselves. These moments, however, seem far from being a constant. When we learn simple methods for accessing this state by appropriately attending to our mind/consciousness., e can come to actually experience this as a constant state.
We can say that when we are in touch with a deep sense of wellbeing, the restoration of physical health often swiftly follows. In instances where physical health cannot be fully restored we can actually remain with and even experience a deeper sense of wellbeing.
To illustrate the link between wellbeing and the restoration of health we can look at a human being as being composed of broadly three aspects.
Three aspects of being human
Let’s look at what a human being is made up of to begin to appreciate the link between wellbeing & health.
In health all these aspects function synergistically to give a sense of life and vitality. When not working well these aspects can become imbalanced, disorganised, and if left unattended, can lead to degeneration of the body.
What can we reasonably expect Classical Chinese Medicine to Heal?
There are broadly three possible outcomes that one can reasonably expect from CCM treatments.
When we are in touch with a boundless sense of wellbeing it can have a very good impact upon the function and architecture of the body. This can always be accessed and deepened whatever the circumstances or state of a person's physical health.
So the strength of CCM is actually to connect you to an inner space of boundless wellbeing. This activates and mobilises the body's structure and function to restore health swiftly and effectively where possible. When a complete restoration of health isn’t possible then we can always access and remain with a deep sense of wellbeing.
