Foods to Decrease or Eliminate
Decreasing or eliminating the consumption of foods from the following categories can be very beneficial for vitality, mental clarity, immunity, and mood.
Cold and Raw foods/drinks
Raw vegetables, salads, sushi, iced drinks, ice cream, smoothies, and foods straight out of the refrigerator.
In Chinese medicine raw foods are considered cold and can therefore produce cold in the body. Cold constricts the body’s flow of energy, resulting in or contributing to pain conditions.
Cold and Raw foods/drinks also tax the energetics of the Spleen, which is responsible for producing Qi, or basic energy, and Blood. Foods in this category also compromise digestion, by cooling the body’s “digestive fire.” This very much correlates with the slowing down of complex enzymatic functions in the digestive system.
For these reasons it is recommended to consume food and drink at room temperature.
Another very important problem with long-term consumption of cold and raw foods is that the body’s immune system, as well as overall vitality, is greatly taxed. Thus the consumption of these foods should be avoided during convalescence (including post-surgery), if a woman is plannign a family, or during pregnancy.
Dairy & Sugar
These food products are known to produce a tremendous amount of stickiness in the body - referred to as “dampness” in Chinese medicine.
If there is any kind of congestion in the body foods in these categories should be avoided.
These conditions gnerally include: sinus congestion/allergies, skin conditions including eczema, psoriasis, and acne, cysts/tumors, fibroids/endometriosis, candidal infections).
Dairy and Sugar also greatly deplete the Spleen (as with cold and raw foods/drinks), and greatly impede its ability to transform food and drinks into usable energy. Symptoms of this appear as fatigue, poor digestion, bloating, intestinal gas, decreased mental clarity (brain fog), and a depressive mood.
What about calcium?
If you take dairy out of your diet and are worried about calcium please understand that, despite what we've been told, dairy foods deplete calcium levels over time. The human body does not normally assimilate cow's milk well.
(There are countless resources available if you're interested in finding out about this issue, from pop websites to sites which analyze the landmark Harvard "nurses study" which highlights what the Chinese have known for thousands of years).
Usable calcium is found in high levels in
Gentle, daily, weight-bearing exercise is the best thing you can do to maintain or strengthen bones.
Gluten is a protein that is found in wheat and other grains. It is extremely binding, and like sugar and dairy, causes congestion and Dampness in the body.
Gradually the body creates Heat as a response to this Dampness. This gives rise to Damp-Heat, an envionment in the body that resembles fermentation or excess acidity in the body.
In it's whole form, wheat was used in Chinese herbal medicine to clear heat in the body. However modern, highly processed and genetically modified wheat is heat-producing, causing inflammation and a host of other issues.
Garlic, Chilies, Spices, Coffee
These substances are heat-producing, and lead to the creation of heat within the body (what is referred to as “internal heat”). Over time, this causes anxiety, restlessness, insomnia, emotional volatility (i.e., angry outbursts), dehydration, and inflammation.
